Breastfeeding Moms: Supermarket snacks to boost milk supply

Breastfeeding Moms: Supermarket snacks to boost milk supply

If you're like me, when I have some free time in the day, I rather sleep or binge on Netflix and mentally switch off. So when it comes to lactation snacks, it's a no-brainer to buy them rather than make my own.

These are my favourite snacks when I'm breastfeeding, and they're available in major supermarkets like Woolies and Coles.

1. Lactation cookies

Woolworths sells these Macro Organic Brewers Yeast Cookies in Buckwheat & Cacao flavour for $8.00 a packet. These cookies are like the healthy version of chocolate in a dense texture. Great for afternoon tea time.

2. Hummus

Both Woolworths and Coles sell Obela Smooth Classic Hommus for $4.00 a tub. Chickpeas are high in protein and is known for its use as a galactagogue. Dip it with celery or crackers for your midday snack.

3. Almonds and pumpkin seeds

Nuts, especially almonds and pumpkin seeds are healthy and full of protein and calcium. Many breastfeeding mothers choose to eat almonds or drink almond milk to increase the creaminess, sweetness, and amount of their breast milk.

4. Muesli bars

Muesli bars are a delicious and healthy snack to throw in the diaper bag for nursing on the go. Choose one containing almonds and nuts which are known galactagogues. Carman's Almond, Hazelnut Vanilla Nut Bars is a great option at $6.00 a pack.

5. Dried apricots

Dried apricots contain phytoestrogens and tryptophan, which naturally boost and balance prolactin (milk-making hormone) levels. Plus they are high in fibre, Vitamin A, C, potassium, and calcium.

Not all women see results from eating lactation foods, but it certainly couldn't hurt to try them. Hopefully, you'll find this list useful for your next grocery trip.
